The Myths Surrounding Dog Toilet Training

Dog toilet training is one of the earliest training you should provide for the puppy. If not properly administered, you will be stuck with a puppy that does its business all over the house and on the furniture. In one case, a friend of mine almostlost his laptop and his temper when his two-month old darling puppy urinated on the keyboard.

The first myth on toilet training a puppy is that you should place newspapers on the floor for the puppy to do its bodily business. This misconception has created some very confused animals because as they have been trained to do their business on the newspapers, they may find any newspaper lying on the floor as the place to go. The puppy will learn very early in its life that it’s okay to pee and pooh in the house. This will definitely be a habit quite difficult to change later on.

The second myth is that you should praise the puppy when it does his business outside. Then if you find any accidents in the house, you should drag the poor animal to the spot and scold it for the accident. Worse still, rub its nose to the wee or pooh, tap it across its rear and say something to the effect of ‘Bad dog, bad dog’. The poor dog may even get long-term emotional stess as it does not understand what is really going on.

Thus if you have decided to keep a puppy, this is my dog training tip. You must be prepared mentally to work out a plan in toilet training it. Take note that the moment a puppy wakes up in the morning, it will need to go pee. Greet it heartily and gently place it outside at the place where you want it to do its business. Once its done, praise it and pat it gently.

The dog toilet training for a puppy can start by developing a pattern. After the puppy has its breakfast, take it outside again. This time when its has done its business, profusely praise it. This should be done especially after the puppy has its morning and afternoon naps, too. And also when there are guests in the house as the excitement sometimes causes accidents to happen.

If accidents do happen, just go and clean them up. If the animal wee or pooh when you are around, you can scream at it at the top of your voice just to startle it. Hopefully it will realise that the place to do his business is outside. But then training older dog may not be so easy as it has already developed some bad habits. Anyway, training older dog will be another dog training tip for another time.
