Jim Kesel asked:

You may think that a dog training career is something you would like to take seriously. But have you really thought well enough about it? Here are some points to ponder before engaging in a full-pledged Dog Training Career.

Consider your inclination to dogs. Do you really love dogs or is it just a group or breed of dogs that you are especially fond of? Can you really work well with them regardless of what age the dog is or what breed, or even if the dog is so stubborn or restless? Before engaging in a dog training career, do consider if you really love working with and teaching the canine population. Make sure that your state of being a certified dog-lover is not a temporary state of fondness for them but a lasting.

Understand your working attitude and skills with people. Dog training careers are not just about training dogs. It is also about training people, specifically the dog keepers- to train their dogs. Being a professional dog trainer means you will be a professional teacher for people as well. You have to have patience to dog keepers, you have to empathize with them and understand their concerns with their dog, and you need to share the same concern for the welfare and the development of their pets.

Consider the type of dog training education you would like to have. There are many ways by which a dog enthusiast transforms into a professional dog trainer. The first option is to read lots and lots of publications about dog training. There are many dog training books, dog training magazines, and dog training articles that can be found on bookstores, and even on the Internet. Another choice is to learn dog training through hands-on experience as a volunteer in dog rescue centers or dog shelters or as an apprentice of a professional dog trainer. If you become an apprentice, then you’ll be able to get a dog training experience that’s guided by an expert. Last but not the least, an aspiring dog trainer can enroll in dog training degree programs offered by dog training schools or veterinary centers. Such programs usually last for months. The usual course involves lectures from professional dog experts and discussions regarding dog learning theories and dog training techniques. Such courses also involve internships in dog training schools for hands-on experiences.

Carefully research what type of dog training career you would want to take. Think about your plans after getting your dog training education. A professional dog trainer can teach dog tricks on a part-time or freelance basis to private individuals. They can also join groups and provide training by groups. Some also opt to teach dog keepers about the necessary steps and measures in training their dogs.

A Dog Training Career can be a very rewarding endeavor. However you must be a good business manager as well as a good dog trainer to be successful. More dog training careers fail as a result of poor business practices then from poor dog training skills.

Lee Dobbins asked:

If you are a new dog owner or simply need to give your dog some additional training one of the first things you need to think about as a dog training collar. Back some years ago there weren’t many options, but today there are many different kinds of training collars and, depending on the task at hand, you may need to buy one particular type or many.

All dog training collars and not created alike in some may be more appropriate for the type of training you need to do if your dog. Here’s an overview of some of the different collars available and what they are best suited for.

Martingale collars are best described as a limited to choke collar. These are similar to a choke collar, however they will not constrict smaller than the size of your dog’s neck, therefore will not roughly choke your dog. They do get tight enough so the dog cannot wiggle out of them and are great for agility training. this type of collar is great when you need to call it that you dog cannot wriggle out of but also did not want to worry about your dog accidentally getting choked.

The head collar looks kind of like a horse halter and goes around the dogs face with the leash attachment under the muzzle. Many people mistake this for muzzle but in fact it is not keep you dog from biting but so that you can lead him from the head. When you read your dog bites had his body has to follow and therefore you have good control over getting your dog to go where you want them to go. This type of collar can feel really weird to dog might take awhile to get used to it. Training with the head collar can be tricky since you don’t want to simply lead to your dog around like a pony or he will become dependent on you meeting him and won’t have a mind of its own!

The pronged collar is good for dogs that are very strong and have a muscular neck. This is a good collar to use if your dog is really wild and you have trouble controlling him. The collar has prongs which poke out into the dog’s neck – not sharp prongs, but more like fingers in the applied pressure helps to control the dog. Some people feel that these collars are cruel (they do look kind of mean, but are not as bad as they look) but they can give you an edge until you can get enough training under your belt to be able to control your dog with a regular collar.

The choke chain used to be really popular caller and leash control device but it’s not use too much today. this is basically attain a ghost or rank and when you make on the chain it tightens up on the dog’s throat. they are out of favor today as the type of training you get by using this kind of chain is usually based on punishment in today’s way of thinking is that positive reinforcement is way better way of training your dog. These can also be very dangerous if the chain gets stuck your dog can literally choked to death. If you do use the choke chain you need to make sure you are with your dog at all times and never leave him change out anywhere with a choke chain collar on. the variation to this, the limited choke collar, is made up of a nylon strap and has the ring sewn into a piece of material so that it cannot move as far and could never choke your dog.

Electronic dog collars can be an effective training device if used properly. Personally, I wouldn’t really want to shock my dog but many people do report that these work great and lessen the training time. The way the callers were is the caller has a receiver that can admit a small jolt of electricity. The trainer holds a remote and when your dog starts to exhibit undesirable behavior you press a button on the remote ( or turn a knob) and he gets a jolt. Eventually he learns when he exhibits the undesirable behavior, he’ll get an unpleasant jolt and therefore this discourages him from repeating this type of behavior. The problem is that many people use this as a punishment when in fact it is intended to simply get the dog’s attention. Don’t wait until your dog is barking excessively and then administer the punishment. In order to properly train your dog you need to be observant and see when he is about to bark and then give him the shock to distract him from the barking behavior in the first place.

No bark collars are intended to discourage a dog from barking. they do this by sensing the vibration of the bark and then providing some sort of deterrent. The chart can be one of three things either shock, a noise, or puff of citrus spray. Once you dog associates back to barking with one of these unpleasant occurrences he might think twice before he barks again. While this might work to discourage her dog from barking, you may be better served by figuring out why he’s barking and trying to eliminate the behavior that way.

Choosing a dog training collar as a matter of personal preference and the needs of your dog. When training, always remember that positive reinforcement is better than punishment and in fact punishment rarely works. Be kind to your dog, be persistent and be patient and you’ll soon have a well-trained and obedient companion for life.

http://Family-Petz.com/

Mark Freeman asked:

As with anything else, when it comes to dog training there is a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things. Far too often, when people are instructing they do the wrong thing as opposed to the right thing. If they are any good results that come from this, it will be pure luck as opposed any deliberate action. For example, if you were trying to train a young child to play basketball you would assess his strengths and weaknesses. But, again, there is a right way and wrong way to do this. Telling the child that he is clumsy is not going to work. But, here’s the thing: the childs problem is that he is clumsy! But, you do not correct problems with coordination by insulting the youngster. The reason is that the child would be more hurt that helped. When it comes to dog training this maxim applies as well.

People assume that when they train a dog if they verbally or physically punish the dog it will learn to behave. Actually, it will not. Instead, the dog will become less inclined to behave. This is because the dog will become fearful or, worse, aggressive when such tactics are employed. What the dog will not become, however, is behaved.

Regarding bad training methods, people understand right away that these are terrible ways to train a dog. After all, who doesn’t think excessive punishment is foolish? But, what many people do not understand is that non-action is another horrible training method as well. Some people may be saying that they understand this because anyone who doesn’t train a dog is going to guarantee bad habits. But, many of these people also do not realize that non-action also includes inconsistent or infrequent training as well.

To say “I train my dog” and the training includes training one day one week, skipping two weeks, training two days in a row, skipping one week, training three days in a row for fifteen minutes and then skipping another week is not proper dog training. It is an inconsistent and lazy method that will never yield the right results.

dog training methods

Amy Conrad asked:

Crate training in very beneficial when it comes to in house dog potty training, because it will assist you in training your dog self control as well as spare you a great deal of effort in cleaning up after your dog when he has had accidents in the house. The crate forces your dog, even young puppy, to keep it in for a period of time. However, do not keep him in the crate for too long and do not use the crate as punishment.

Dogs have a natural instinct not to mess in its shelter, but if there is plenty of space, it will relieve itself as long as there is enough space for it to sleep in. So in selecting a crate remember to get a crate that is perfect for your dogs size.

It is also a good idea to get a crate big enough for your dog when he is his adult size. You can divide it to fit him as he grows. In this way you will not have to buy more than one crate for your dog as he gets bigger.

When choosing a crate for your dog, you should take into account that it needs to be the right size for the dog, not only for general house training purposes, but especially for potty training.

If the crate is too big for your dog, he will not see the need to keep it in if he has to go.He will also not have a problem with relieving himself on the one end of the crate and sleep on the other end.

A very young puppy should not be left in the crate for more than 2 hours at a time depending on its ability to control its bladder. As your puppy gets older you will notice that he can keep it in for longer periods of time.

So it is really a matter of your puppy”s individual development and abilities. There is really no rule in this regard. Older dogs can be left in the crate for longer, even overnight.

You should monitor your dog while he is still not 100% crate trained yet as he might get anxious and hurt itself in an attempt to escape from the crate.

Happy puppy house training.

professional dog training

James C asked:

Training your dog can be an incredibly frustrating experience. It is especially difficult if you have no formal training or past experience in dog training. If you are having trouble in your quest to have a well trained dog, this article will give you five tips to help you train your pet.

1. Begin training your dog as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more ingrained your dog’s bad habits become.

2. Pay attention to when your dog has to use the restroom. They usually have to go within minutes of eating, waking and playing. Take them outside at those times and reward them with treats when they use the restroom outdoors.

3. If you are crate training, do not leave your pet in a crate for more than four hours. A puppy can not hold it that long and you do not want them to get used to going in the crate.

4. Socialize your new puppy as much as possible. Introduce them to other dogs and people so that they will not become aggressive.

5. Never train your dog when you are upset. If you dog is afraid of you, they will not learn. Never use their name in anger. The last thing you want is for them to associate their name with something bad.

Of course there is much more to training your pet than this but these five tips will get you well on your way to having a well trained dog.

dog training methods

Dr. Mark Clayson asked:

Dogs as they say are man’s best friend. True enough, you cannot question the loyalty that dogs demonstrate upon their masters. They are also very affectionate as well and could even sense if something is bothering us. You may observe that quite often when you come home from a hard day at work, your dog will immediately approach you as if sensing you need some comfort or company. Many of us may have dogs in our homes or are planning to have one. It is important that we properly train our dogs to ensure not only their very own safety but most importantly for you and your family’s protection.

You are in charge

Being the master of the house, it is important that your dog is aware of where he stands as a member of your family. You have to let him know who is boss and that you don’t want him bossing around. Your dog needs to be educated with the house rules to avoid encountering future problems. You wouldn’t want your dog to be going wild, tearing at your sofa upholstery, chewing at your expensive shoes or worse getting violent and destructive which could be dangerous for you and your family. There even have been cases of dogs getting hostile to the point of sinking their teeth onto their very own masters. You have to demonstrate upon your pet that only you and your family members have the authority to have unlimited access inside the home. Your dog needs to be aware of his limited physical access and that there may be certain areas that he is not allowed entry. It is crucial that you do all these while your dog is still a puppy for as we all know it is indeed difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.

Use dog gates to train your dog

Your dog may feel some fret or apprehension when you try to isolate him or restrict his movements inside your home especially if your dog is used to being at your side most of the time. Your dog may feel abandoned and may wonder why you had to leave him shut out of your room or left inside the living room with the door shut while you are in the kitchen preparing a meal. It may be hard at first for them to understand why they are being restricted. Using dog gates could help you train as well as restrict your dog’s movements without making them feel any trouble or perplexity because the dog can see you right through the door gates. You can find numerous indoor gates that would fit your need from short gates for small dogs and tall gates for the big dogs. Most indoor gates are designed not to harm your flooring or walls.

These dog gates are also important to prevent your dog from falling or tumbling down the stairs especially if your dog is still learning how to ascend and descend your staircase. If you allow your dog upstairs, putting a dog gate on top of the stairs will let your dog go down with you by its side so you could make certain that it makes a slow climb down.

If you are concerned with how the indoor dog gate will look inside your home, you don’t have to worry for you can find numerous types in a style and design that will surely fit with the decorations inside your home.

natural dog training

Luke Blaise asked:

If you own a business or a large house, or any other property that you need to protect than having a security dog can make good sense. After all security dogs work for almost free and you don’t have to pay them an hourly wage like a security guard.

But however, finding trained security dogs or training your own security dogs can be a time consuming and expensive proposition. However thanks to the increase in awareness of proper dog training techniques some dogs can be trained much faster with these newer techniques.

Just one simple search on the Internet can reveal several different dog security training websites where you can actually purchase a dog that is already trained in protection. For those of you who have the money or who are short on time this might be the best route.

However, if you have the time to train your dog there are many books out there and videos that you can purchase and sometimes they are even workshops in your area on how to train your own dog to act as a security dog.

Also remember that if you’re going to take the step to have a security dog that is trained in attacking people you should also have liability insurance just in case the dog accidentally attacks someone that he should not have.

Remember don’t wait until something goes wrong before looking into dog security training, start today and find the protection that you need to keep your business or your family safe.

dog training book

Michael Russell asked:

Nothing will be more important to your dog training success than keeping a good log. It will be your reference for years to come. This log will prove invaluable in providing you with short cuts and reference material. If kept right, it can cut weeks off your training time. The big three ring five subject binders with the pocket folders in them seem to work the best. Get one binder for each dog you train. Make headings on the pocket folders. Some suggestions – yard work, live bird training, gun training and retrieval. Then put the appropriate information in that section of the notebook.

Keep expense information in the folders. It can come in handy to know what you have spent on each dog. Yes, dog training does cost money. The receipts in the folders can help you find places you may be able to cut costs. If you are doing this for a living, the receipts will be handy for tax purposes. You need to keep several small pads that will fit in your pocket. Put the name of each dog on the front if you are training more than one. As the day’s events unfold make notes in the pad. Transfer these notes into your log binder at the end of the day. Keep this log in a safe place. As the years go by, you will see how valuable it is.

When you are out in the field jot down everything you think is important and then some. Did the dog do good or bad on this part of his training? Did you, as a dog trainer, do good or bad? Keep track of not only the dogs’ performance, but the trainers as well. Was there something that upset your dog during the day? If mistakes were made, what can you do next time to correct them? You are probably thinking, “I am trying to train a dog here. I do not have time to write all this down”. There should be breaks in any dog training session. Use this time to write your notes. Develop a kind of short hand for certain phrases. It is really easier than you think.

The day is done the dog taken care of and put in the kennel. Now is the time to transfer your notes to your big log. Don’t say, “Oh, I can do that tomorrow”. While it is still fresh in your mind is the time for updates. You will be surprised what you will forget overnight. That shorthand might not make as much sense tomorrow. You may even remember a few things you did not jot down.

If you have a computer, and everyone seems to these days, copy your loose-leaf log into Word or Notepad and save a copy to a disk for backup. It cannot be stressed enough how important this log will be to your dog training efforts. It contains what worked and what did not. It will make starting a new dog and new dog training session that much easier.

You will, over time, develop your own style and methods for keeping this log. This article just provides you with the idea and basics. Nothing is too silly or trivial to include in your log. Things that seem trivial may prove important in the end. Good luck and may all your dog-training efforts produce champions.

dog training videos

Melisa Sterling asked:

Going through dog training is something every dog owner should do. Anyone can appreciate a well behaved dog. But did you know that there a several different kinds of training and not all are right for your dog?

Most people aren’t even aware of the different types of training. The different types of training are based for dogs at different stages.

Some dogs have had training before, while others have had none. Because of this, it is best that you know which kind of training to put your dog in.

The first type of training is “basic dog training”. This type of training can be for puppies or for adult dogs that have never received any type of instruction. This course teaches dogs to sit, stay, and come.

Basic training also emphasizes socialization skills(especially for puppies). Good socialization skills teach your dog to get along with other dogs and people.

If your dog has never had any form of lessons, then it needs to start with the basics.

The next type is intermediate lessons. This is not for puppies. Intermediate courses are for any adult dogs who have either been through basic dog training or for dogs that have been trained the basics well enough by their owner.

Intermediate courses teach dogs to heel, walk proper on a leash, fetch and return, and it also goes over the basics of training in more detail (sit, stay, come, etc.).

Advanced dog training is the last kind available. Advanced lessons areonly allowed for adult dogs who have taken at least 1 course before and they must have passed it as well.

All of the basic and intermediate aspects are gone over in great detail in the beginning. Then the course goes to teaching your dog to follow these commands with hand signals (come, stay, sit, heel, lie down, etc.)

Once the dog learns hand signals, the advance course then moves to teaching your dog to walk beside you without a leash and for the dog to stay beside you at all times. It also teaches your dog to pay attention to you and to avoid distractions.

This course is only for very well behaved dogs.

All of these courses should utilize positive reinforcement (praise and rewards). They should not use any negative training techniques (hitting or yelling). Be sure that you pick a dog training course that only uses positive reinforcement.

Also be sure that you select the course that is right for your dog. With the right course, your dog can be well behaved, well adjusted, and truly a joy to have!

dog training supplies

Dr. Mark Clayson asked:

Many people enjoy hunting for birds and in hunting it is important for you to have a dog that would help you point as well as retrieve the bird that is being hunted upon. Producing a dog that is trained to hunt is not at all an easy task and may require some ample time before the dog is very much ready to go into the wild with its master to begin a hunting session. In most instances, it takes a lot of training sessions, specific and specialized equipment for training as well as on hunt training during hunting seasons.

Basic obedience…

Before you go on training your dog to become a good retriever during hunts, it is very important for your dog to know basic obedience skills like sitting, coming when called upon, being quiet, staying and the like to ensure that he obeys your commands and that he knows how to control his behavior. A hunt is often spoiled or ruined by a rowdy or unmanageable dog that scares the geese or a dog that may run off quickly from a blind putting at risk a shot that could lead to a shooting disaster.

The needed equipment in training…

When you are ready to train your retriever for hunting there are several equipments necessary to ensure a good training and to obtain positive results. A foremost need would be a rope made of polypropylene measuring at about 30 feet more or less. The rope would be utilized to help the trainer control the dog during training and hunting exercises. With the rope, it wouldn’t be necessary for you to pursue after your dog and correct it if it strays during the exercise.

A gun is also necessary during training to get your dog used to the sound of gunfire. Most dogs fear very loud noises like gun shots. A handgun would be advisable over a shot gun. A shot gun is quite bulky for you to carry around especially since you will be hauling with you other training equipments plus controlling the lead line. You will also need dummies or what they call training bumpers to teach your dog to fetch. These come in a variety of colors depending on the training exercise you will be performing with your dog.

A whistle is also very important to call your dog’s attention. Quite often, your voice may barely be audible for your dog to hear especially if he has already covered quite a distance from you. A whistle produces a loud and distinct sound that could alert your dog to return back to you and not to pursue the search for the fowl any longer.

You would also need some help from someone to toss bumpers into the air as a simulation of falling birds. If you will be by yourself during the training, you may opt to utilize bird launchers instead.

Available also are dog collars used for training that administer a very mild electric shock to your dog. The advantage this offers is that it allows immediate correction of a wrong action or when your dog fails to responds to your commands.

In training your dogs for hunting, learn from people who are experts in this field. You can find a lot of sources online as well as detailed instructional videos that could help you with this task.

electronic dog training collars
